California Almond Update

The National Agricultural Statistics Service released California’s objective almond production forecast at 1.35 billion pounds, down 100 million pounds from the subjective May estimate of 1.45 billion pounds. If realized, the 1.35 billion pounds would be down 263 million pounds from last year’s record production of 1.613 billion.

Several factors are impacting the crop this year. Trees typically need rest in years after a large crop is produced. The average nut set was down 25 percent from the year prior—a result of both reduced numbers of tree flowers and poor weather during the bloom period, including untimely rains. Now, many growers are concerned they are not going to receive enough water this season due to limited state water supply for irrigation.

Demand for almonds is estimated at approximately 1.375 billion pounds for the 2008/09 crop year. The industry will carry over 400 million pounds into the 2009/10 crop year, thereby allowing itself to maintain shipments at or above the record deliveries seen this year.
